Black Ground Floral Vine Block Print Cotton

A dense, all-over floral vine in white and grey on a deep black ground. Large open flowers, pointed leaves, berry clusters and paisley forms wind freely across the cloth. The black ground gives it real depth and the white print is crisp and detailed. A sophisticated, versatile fabric that works as well for interiors as it does for garments.

Hand block printed in Bagru, Rajasthan, one of the great centres of Indian block printing, where the Chhipa community has practised this craft for generations. Bagru printing is characterised by its earthy, warm palette derived from natural dyes: madder root for reds and browns, iron for black, pomegranate rind and other plant sources for golden tones. Each colour is applied separately using hand-carved wooden blocks on undyed or pre-dyed cotton cloth. The slight variation in registration and the occasional small irregularity in the print are the marks of the hand-made process.
