Cream Ground Ochre Geometric Star Block Print Cotton

A dense, interlocking geometric star pattern in warm ochre and dark brown on a natural cream ground. Eight-pointed stars, cross forms and small flower centres tile perfectly across the full width. The overall effect is almost mosaic-like, reminiscent of Islamic tilework. Quietly beautiful and works with almost everything.

Hand block printed in Bagru, Rajasthan, one of the great centres of Indian block printing, where the Chhipa community has practised this craft for generations. Bagru printing is characterised by its earthy, warm palette derived from natural dyes: madder root for reds and browns, iron for black, pomegranate rind and other plant sources for golden tones. Each colour is applied separately using hand-carved wooden blocks on undyed or pre-dyed cotton cloth. The slight variation in registration and the occasional small irregularity in the print are the marks of the hand-made process.
