Madder Red Geometric Maze Block Print Cotton

A bold, all-over interlocking geometric maze pattern in deep madder red and warm gold on a natural cream ground. Small six-petalled flowers sit at each junction of the design, printed in white with black dot centres. The overall effect is dense, graphic and completely distinctive. One of those prints that looks better the more fabric you see of it.

Hand block printed in Bagru, Rajasthan, one of the great centres of Indian block printing, where the Chhipa community has practised this craft for generations. Bagru printing is characterised by its earthy, warm palette derived from natural dyes: madder root for reds and browns, iron for black, pomegranate rind and other plant sources for golden tones. Each colour is applied separately using hand-carved wooden blocks on undyed or pre-dyed cotton cloth. The slight variation in registration and the occasional small irregularity in the print are the marks of the hand-made process.
